Until fairly recently all anyone knew was "stainless, stainless steel, surgical stainless" (all 440) otherwise it is carbon steel. I'm not a fan of current Gerber, but it's a matter of style not steel. Take a look at Rough Rider, Marbles, Schrade (all Chinese made).
